Long before Hop Car Brewing was ever an idea - before the recipes, the logo, the plans, or the building - there were two Butler High Schoolkids who spent their free time in garages and basements, making music, burping into microphones, and piecing together cheap car audio systems.

Steve and Bill met in Junior High School history class. They bonded over creativity, late-night band practices, a shared invisibility that comes with playing in the rhythm section, and let’s not forget about their inappropriate sense of potty humor.

Music gave them a stage, but friendship gave them a foundation. After high school, as often happens, life pulled them in different directions. Steve built a career in construction. Bill sharpened his craft and became a beloved local chef, gaining a loyal following for his inventive culinary work. Their paths drifted apart — not intentionally, just naturally — the way life tends to scatter people who once saw each other every day.

But Butler has a way of calling people back home. Steve and Bill both wanted to see Butler revitalize. Bill, with his culinary skills and naivety opened the Chop Shop. Steve started revitalizing buildings.

Sometimes things in life line up and just make sense. In 2025, the building became available. Steve bought the building and had an idea. What if they built something together again? Not a band this time — but a place. A place where creativity still mattered. With the support of their wives, Meredith and Lindsay they wanted to create a place rooted in great food, great beer, and great people. A place that reflected everything that allowed Butler to thrive in its manufacturing heyday.

From that spark, Hop Car Brewing was born.

Steve brought vision, heart, and the drive to create a welcoming community space. Bill brought his culinary skills, his passion for flavor, and the joy of feeding people well. Together, they imagined a restaurant and brewery that felt like home — a place where friends gather, families linger, and locals feel proud.

Hop Car Brewing isn’t just a business. It’s returning manufacturing to a place that was built on it.

It’s the reunion of two friends.

It’s a love letter to their hometown.

It’s a promise to serve Butler with warmth, creativity, and connection.

Because no matter how far they wandered, Steve and Bill were always rooted in Butler.
